(1831 – 1894) 'The Butcher of Kentucky', controversial Union brigadier general who fought in multiple campaigns early in the war but gained notoriety as military commander of Kentucky where he imposed strict martial law to combat Confederate guerrilla groups. War-date A.N.S. on ‘Head-Quarters District of Kentucky’ letterhead, 1p. 4to., Lexington, Aug. 30, 1864, to a C. S. Pascal, in full: ‘I have never been before Petersburg; my services have been confined to the South West.’ He signs ‘S. G. Burbridge’ in black ink at the conclusion, adding his rank ‘Brev Maj. Gen. Comdg. Dis. Of Ky.’ Mounted, shows folds, with a period photo tabbed to the bottom left corner, in very good condition overall.
