(1833-1908) Confederate Lieutenant General who directed artillery at Second Bull Run and Antietam, later led a corps at Atlanta and in the Carolinas. An interesting manuscript D.S. ‘Stephen D. Lee’, 2pp. 4to., [Charleston], July 16, 1861, ‘articles of agreement’ between Lee, representing the Confederate States Army, and several parties representing the Moultrie House hotel on Sullivan’s Island in Charleston Harbor, agreeing to rent the hotel to the Army in order to house troops and officers. In part: ‘Articles of agreement… between Captain S D Lee acting assistant Quarter Master in the Service of the Confederate States if America of the one part and Peter B Lalaney, W M Martin, the Estate of G W Black and the Estate of Daniel Mixon proprietors of the Moultrie House Sullivans Island in the State of South Carolina of the other part. This agreement witnesseth that the said [parties]… have mutually agreed and by these presents do mutually covenant and agree to and with each other in manner following viz. 1st That the [parties]... agree to rent the Moultrie House and the Rail Road leading from the House to the Steamboat Landing for the sum of $230.00 per month – for the period it may be occupied by troops of the Confederate States…’ Lee signs with his rare full signature in black ink at the conclusion, adding his contemporary rank ‘Capt C. S. A.’, with the other parties entering into the agreement and witnesses countersigning. Shows horizontal folds with small splits thereto at the right edge, slightly toned and with a paper clip mark at the top edge, and with some minute chips to the bottom, otherwise in fine condition overall. The Moultrie House was a luxury resort opened in 1850, and was utilized as a supply depot and barracks servicing nearby Fort Moultrie upon its occupation by Confederate Troops.
