Description
Northern Mexico Huaxtec culture, ca. 900–1500 CE. An ancient ceramic vessel depicting an anthropomorphic figure, characteristic of the Huaxtec style known for its distinct figurative pottery. The face has closed eyes and is in the form of a bat which was symbolic of the afterlife. The vessel exhibits the classic matte, sandy-textured slip common to utilitarian and funerary Huaxtec ceramics. It is from the previous private collection of an older gentleman who inherited them and were collected in Mexico in the 1930s by his father. It has extensive cracking and repairs done from damage sustained while buried, however it still displays very well and is a rare piece.
