Description
(1825 - 1880) Confederate brigadier general who led Cleburne's brigade after the latter's wounding, fought at Chickamauga and in the Chattanooga Campaign, including the unsuccessful defense of Missionary Ridge, and later fought under Forrest. Great war-date D.S., Quartermaster's Office, 1p. 12mo., Aug. 24, 1864, a pass issued to C. A. McDaniel by Quartermaster Capt. Thaddeus Marshall allowing him to 'pass & repass in the vicinity of Atlanta' for 30 days. On verso, from his headquarters and on the same day, Hill approves the pass. Folded into a small square for easy (and hasty!) carriage by McDaniel. This pass was signed only nine days before the city surrendered to Gen. William T. Sherman. Undoubtedly, Foster 'passed' the limits of the city - and never returned.
