Description
(1834-1896) Confederate brigadier general who served as Johnston's chief of artillery during the Atlanta campaign and Hood's chief of staff during the Nashville campaign. Rare, fine association A.N.S., 1p. 5.75 in. square, [n.p., n.d., ca. October, 1864], to Maj. Gen. JOSEPH WHEELER (1836-1906), the brilliant Confederate cavalry commander who raided Rosecrans at Chattanooga and harassed Sherman's army through Georgia and the Carolinas. Shoup pens a short dispatch, possibly intended to be sent as a telegram, to Wheeler, instructing him to ‘Please ride to Hd. Qrs. Gen Hood…’ He signs ‘F. A. Shoup’ at the conclusion, adding ‘Chief of Staff’ and the time ‘11.20 A. M. 4-’. Shows old folds with some resultant ink transfer, toned, and with a few spots of foxing, otherwise in very good condition overall.
