Description
(1827 – 1864) Confederate brigadier general in command of a mixed brigade of Mississippi and Tennessee soldiers. Winning distinction at the Battle of Coffeeville, Baldwin would later participate in the battles of Port Gibson and Champion's Hill during the Vicksburg Campaign. Captured at Vicksburg and exchanged, he was assigned to the District of Mobile. There, he was killed in an accident when a broken stirrup caused him to fall off his horse. Rare war-date signature cut from a letter: ‘Respectfully Yr Obt Svt, W. E. Baldwin Brig. Genl. Comdg.'. Fine condition, matted with a reproduction photo of Baldwin in uniform, set into an ornate wood frame.
