(1829-1905) Confederate brigadier general who fought in the Maryland, Chancellorsville, and Gettysburg campaigns. Later served as a U.S. Congressman and fought post-war Reconstruction policies in the South. Postal cover signed 'C.A. Battle' in the return address, 4 x 6 in., Petersburg, date illeg., addressed to Gen. Fitzhugh Lee (1835-1905) Confederate major general, Governor of Virginia, nephew of Robert E. Lee. An intriguing pencil note at left in an unknown hand comments on the letter once enclosed (not present): 'Sergeant in Curshaw's [sic, Kershaw's] Div. Says he heard Genl Lee tell Longstreet he disobeyed his orders'. Paper loss to the top from being opened, else fine. Matted in grey with a photo portrait and set into a silvered wood frame.
