
Description
(1827 - 1871) Confederate brigadier general who served at Shiloh, Booneville, and in the Atlanta Campaign. Killed in a private feud in Tennessee. A.E.S. on the verso of a war date payment warrant, 1p. oblong 8vo., Montgomery, Dec. 30, 1862, issued by the Alabama Treasury Department to and paying Clanton $1000 for ‘Public Defense’. Clanton endorses the verso as having received the funds. Signed on the face by JOHN GILL SHORTER (1818-1872), Civil War Governor of Alabama whose term was plagued by having to deal with resistance to war effort policies. Scattered stains, with large tear repaired on the verso with tape.
