
Description
(1818 - 1885) Union major general whose army was routed at Bull Run. and who was later reprimanded for his command of the III Corps at Cedar Mountain and Second Bull Run. Good association, early partly-printed D.S., 1p. large folio, West Point, Dec. 31, 1842, a partial muster roll for musicians under McDowell’s command at the U.S. Military Academy. He signs ‘I. McDowell’ in black ink as a lieutenant, with future brigadier general and Chief of Engineers RICHARD DELAFIELD (1798-1873) countersigning as commandant of the Academy. A later partial muster roll of musicians is present on the verso, and a 4to. sheet charting musicians enlisted, discharged and court-martialed by McDowell in the same period is affixed at the right edge. Shows folds, ragged at the left edge, otherwise in very good overall condition.
